Preview

The Chicago Cubs' postseason lives or dies Wednesday, September 30, when Kevin Gausman takes the ball against the San Diego Padres and Nick Pivetta in the Wild Card round at Petco Park, first pitch at 10:00 PM ET. This is not a regular-season tune-up — this is October baseball, single-elimination stakes, with the Cubs carrying their season on a cross-country trip to San Diego. Catch the action on Peacock/NBCSN or on 104.3 The Score if you're driving home from work and need pitch-by-pitch on the radio.

Starting Pitchers: Gausman vs. Pivetta in a Wild Card Showdown

Kevin Gausman is Chicago's guy on the biggest stage the Cubs have seen in some time. The veteran right-hander brings elite stuff and playoff experience to what is a brutal road environment in San Diego. Gausman's ability to command his split-finger fastball will be tested early by a Padres lineup that is loaded top to bottom. This is the assignment he was brought here for, and postseason Gausman is not a pitcher you want to dismiss.

Nick Pivetta gets the call for the Padres at home, and Petco Park will be rocking behind him. Pivetta has the kind of mid-rotation versatility that can disrupt a lineup looking for predictability. The Cubs will need to be patient and disciplined in the box — an undisciplined early approach against Pivetta in a short series is a quick ticket home.

San Diego Padres Lineup to Watch

The Padres are putting a serious lineup in front of Gausman. Fernando Tatis Jr. leads off from right field, and the Cubs cannot afford to let him ignite this offense early. Behind him, Manny Machado bats third and provides the kind of professional at-bat that can grind a pitcher's pitch count into uncomfortable territory by the fourth inning. Ty France sits cleanup at first base, and Jackson Merrill follows in the five-hole in center. Xander Bogaerts brings veteran presence from the six-spot, and 19-year-old catcher Ethan Salas batting seventh gives San Diego a dangerous lineup with no soft spots. Jake Cronenworth rounds out the order at second base.

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. (RF, leadoff): Cannot let him get on base and set the table for Machado and France.
  • Manny Machado (3B, No. 3): One of the most dangerous hitters in the NL — Gausman must establish his split early against him.
  • Ethan Salas (C, No. 7): The young catcher is a legitimate threat even batting seventh — no spot to coast.

Keys to the Game for the Cubs

  • Gausman must go deep into the game. A taxed Cubs bullpen in a Wild Card scenario is a dangerous proposition. If Gausman can give six-plus innings, Chicago controls its own fate.
  • Limit Tatis Jr.'s impact. In a short series setting, one player can change everything. Keeping Tatis off the bases and out of scoring position early is a priority.
  • Manufacture runs on the road. Petco Park is not a hitter-friendly environment. The Cubs will need to string together at-bats, take walks, and avoid relying on the three-run homer to get the job done.
  • Bullpen management. With everything on the line, every reliever arm counts. Smart deployment out of the Cubs' bullpen in the middle and late innings will be critical if Gausman's night ends before the ninth.

Prediction

This one is going to be close, and it should be — that's what Wild Card baseball is. Gausman is a quality pitcher capable of delivering in October, and the Cubs have the lineup to compete against Pivetta. That said, San Diego has the home-crowd advantage, a deep and dangerous lineup, and a pitcher in Pivetta who can be difficult to solve. The Cubs pull this out 4-3 in a tense, late-game grind, with Gausman delivering six strong innings before the bullpen slams the door. Cubs advance.
