Cubs vs. Royals Preview: Friday, August 7, 2026 at Kauffman Stadium
Starting Pitching Matchup
Kansas City is rolling with Daniel Lynch IV on the mound. Lynch is a left-handed arm who has been part of the Royals' rotation, and any Cubs lineup — right-handed heavy or not — needs to come in with a plan against him. The Cubs' starter remains unannounced heading into this preview, which is a storyline worth tracking. Manager David Ross — or whoever is running this ballclub — will need to have his rotation answer ready before first pitch. An unknown arm on your own side heading into a road game is not ideal, and the Cubs will need their guy to match Lynch zero for zero early.
Kansas City Lineup to Watch
The Royals are putting a loaded card on the table Friday night. Bobby Witt Jr. bats second and remains one of the most dangerous players in the American League — a legitimate MVP-caliber shortstop who can hurt you in every phase of the game. Hitting behind him is Jac Caglianone at first base, a powerful bat who gives the middle of this lineup real punch. Salvador Perez slots in at cleanup as the DH, and at this stage of his career Perez still knows how to do damage in big spots. The Cubs' pitching staff — whoever takes the ball — cannot afford to let that 2-3-4 stretch do whatever it wants.
Carter Jensen leads off and catches for Kansas City, an interesting construction for a catcher to hit first. Starling Marte bats eighth in the outfield, a veteran presence even in the lower third of the order. Speed and contact at the top, power in the middle — this is a Royals lineup that can beat you multiple ways.
Keys to the Game
- Identify the Cubs' starter: No confirmed pitcher for Chicago means the first key is simply knowing who takes the ball. Watch for the announcement and adjust expectations accordingly.
- Neutralize Witt Jr. and Perez: Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez are the engines of this Royals offense. Keeping them off the bases and out of big spots is the Cubs' defensive priority number one.
- Work Lynch early: Left-handers can give Cubs hitters fits when they fall behind in counts. The approach has to be patient but aggressive — make Lynch work and get into that Kansas City bullpen.
- Road discipline: Kauffman Stadium is a tough environment. The Cubs need to stay sharp defensively and avoid the mental mistakes that road trips can produce late in the summer grind.
Prediction
This one is genuinely hard to call with the Cubs' starter still a mystery, and that uncertainty nudges this slightly toward Kansas City. The Royals lineup has real firepower top to bottom, and Lynch gives them a solid foundation. That said, the Cubs have the offensive capability to put up runs against anyone on any given night. Call it a tight 4-3 Kansas City win, but do not be surprised if the Cubs flip the script and steal one on the road. Either way, this is a game worth watching from the first pitch to the last out.
