Preview

The Cubs and White Sox bring the city series to the North Side on Monday, August 17, with first pitch at Wrigley Field set for 8:05 PM ET. Shota Imanaga starts for Chicago against White Sox right-hander Luis Castillo in what is always one of the most charged matchups on the calendar regardless of standings. Bragging rights are on the line in a regular season game that Cubs fans will pack the Friendly Confines to witness. Pete Crow-Armstrong leads off for the Cubs with a loaded lineup behind him — this one has the feel of a game Chicago is built to win at home.

Starting Pitchers: Imanaga vs. Castillo

Shota Imanaga gets the ball for the Cubs. The left-hander has been one of the most reliable arms in Chicago's rotation, and a city series start at Wrigley is exactly the kind of moment he has handled well. His combination of sharp command and deceptive movement gives the Cubs a genuine edge when he is on the mound.

Luis Castillo draws the assignment for the White Sox. The right-hander is a proven veteran capable of keeping any lineup off-balance with his high-spin fastball and devastating changeup. The Cubs will need to be patient and disciplined early — Castillo's stuff demands respect, and chasing his pitches out of the zone is a losing strategy.

Cubs Lineup to Watch

  • Pete Crow-Armstrong (CF, leadoff): PCA at the top sets the tone. His speed and instincts on the bases create pressure from the first at-bat.
  • Alex Bregman (3B, cleanup): Batting fourth, Bregman is the power anchor in this order. A patient hitter who can punish pitches in the zone, he is the most dangerous out in this lineup with runners on base.
  • Seiya Suzuki (RF, 2-hole): Suzuki in the two-spot means the Cubs can manufacture and muscle up depending on the situation. He is a difficult at-bat for any pitcher.
  • Nico Hoerner (SS, 6th): Hoerner's contact ability and on-base skills keep the lineup churning deep into the order.

White Sox Threats to Know

  • Munetaka Murakami (1B, 2nd): The Japanese star brings legitimate power to the middle of Chicago's lineup. Imanaga will need to avoid leaving pitches elevated against him.
  • Miguel Vargas (3B, 3rd): Vargas provides a contact-and-gap threat that can string together damage in the middle innings.
  • Randal Grichuk (DH, cleanup): A veteran bat who can still turn on a fastball — don't let the Cubs' bullpen get careless with him late.

Keys to the Game

  • Imanaga establishing his fastball command early to set up his off-speed pitches against an unfamiliar White Sox lineup.
  • The Cubs middle of the order — Busch, Bregman, Happ — doing damage against Castillo before he finds a groove.
  • Wrigley crowd energy is a real factor in a city series game. The Cubs need to reward the home faithful with early offense.
  • Bullpen management matters in August. The Cubs should resist pushing Imanaga past his limits if the pitch count climbs.

Prediction

This is Imanaga's stage, and Wrigley Field is his arena. The Cubs lineup has the depth to solve Castillo at least twice through the order, and the home crowd will be loud from the first pitch. Expect a competitive game that stays close into the sixth or seventh inning, with the Cubs finding enough offense to pull away late. Cubs win, 4–2.
